Intro to Dressmaking for Tweens & Teens is for students who want to learn how to sew clothes. This intro-level series consists of 6 classes that will teach students basic skills for sewing clothes, including learning about fabric, seams, measurements, using patterns, and sewing with woven and knit fabrics. Students will sew 3 basic garments that will help to develop a good foundation for garment construction--see project descriptions below. (An intermediate level will be offered Spring 2018.)

Skill Level: advanced beginner and beyond (Intro to Sewing and basic sewing machine experience is a required prerequisite)

Sizing Range for Patterns: Chest: 28"-34.5", Waist: 24.5"-28", Hip: 30"-37"

Dates & Times for the Intro Series, WINTER 2018: This is a 6-class series and each class is 2 hours long. We will meet twice a month for 3 months.

Fee

  • $250 includes intro series, materials, and book*
  • $200 for the intro series only, does not include the book and student will need to provide their own materials (student can use a studio copy of the book)

*We will be using the book "Ms. Figgy's Garment School for Girls".

SEWING PROJECTS & FABRIC REQUIREMENTS

  • Dressmaking Basics (learn about fabric, seams, measurements, using patterns) 
  • A-Line Skirt: 1 1/4 yards of woven/cotton fabric, 3/4"-wide elastic that measures 1" smaller than your waist measurement
  • Dolman Top: 1 1/2 yards of knit fabric
  • PJ Pants: 2 yards of woven/cotton fabric (2 1/2 yards for size L and XL)
